Coming Fall 2025: SMART Certification at Segulyev Dental Arts in Dallas, TX!

Hello, I’m Dr. James Segulyev, DDS and we’re excited to share that Segulyev Dental Arts will officially be SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) Certified by late fall 2025. This certification from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) represents our deep commitment to safe, mercury-free, biologic dentistry. As we work toward this milestone, I want to offer insight into what mercury-safe dentistry means for you and your long-term health.

Mercury-Safe Dentistry at Segulyev Dental Arts

Here in Dallas, I’ve built Segulyev Dental Arts around the belief that optimal wellness begins with intentional care—starting in the mouth. I never place mercury (amalgam) fillings, and for patients who wish to have existing mercury fillings removed, I follow strict protocols to ensure the process is done as safely as possible.

Our approach is rooted in the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol developed by the IAOMT. This rigorous, science-based method is designed to protect you, our team, and the environment from toxic mercury vapors and particles that can be released during the removal process.

What SMART Certification Means for You

The SMART certification involves extensive training in mercury-safe techniques and a deep understanding of the dangers of mercury exposure. Traditional dentistry often overlooks the risks associated with improper amalgam removal, which can expose patients and staff to harmful levels of mercury vapor.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. Even small amounts can be harmful—especially to those who are sensitive or unable to detox efficiently. Children, in particular, are more vulnerable due to their developing neurological systems. That’s why the IAOMT’s protocol is so critical.

How I Protect You During Mercury Removal

When I remove mercury fillings, I follow the SMART protocol step-by-step to minimize your exposure:

  • Air filtration systems: We use a high-volume air filtration system in the treatment room to capture mercury vapors and particles.
  • Amalgam separator: This ensures all mercury waste is properly collected and not released into the water system.
  • Protective gear: My team and I wear protective gowns, sealed masks, face shields, and non-latex gloves.
  • Patient protection: You’ll be covered in an impermeable drape and given a clean external air source through a nasal mask to prevent inhalation of mercury vapor.
  • Isolation and suction: I use a dental dam (or Isodry), a saliva ejector, and a powerful mercury vacuum with water to cool and capture particles as I remove the filling.

This comprehensive protocol dramatically reduces mercury exposure during the procedure—for both you and our team.

Understanding the Risks of Mercury in Dentistry

While organizations like the ADA and FDA still stand behind the safety of mercury fillings, there’s growing concern—especially within the biologic dental community—about their potential long-term health effects. Mercury is toxic at any level, and research suggests that amalgam fillings continuously release vapors over time, particularly when they’re being placed or removed.

Some patients can naturally detox mercury, while others retain it in their system. The result? A wide range of symptoms that may show up years after placement. The concern is compounded by studies like the one from the University of Calgary, which linked mercury from amalgam fillings to changes in brain tissue associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Responsible Mercury Removal—Start to Finish

As a mercury-safe dentist, I follow strict IAOMT protocols not only during removal—but also afterward. Mercury can’t just be tossed in the trash or even in medical waste. It must be sealed, stored, and disposed of by licensed hazardous waste companies. After every case, we receive a certificate confirming the mercury was properly handled.

It’s a powerful contradiction—mercury is considered hazardous waste once removed from your mouth, yet many dental offices still place it. That’s one of many reasons I choose to practice mercury-free dentistry.
