If you struggle with jaw pain, headaches, clenching, poor sleep, snoring, or waking up feeling exhausted, you may wonder: Could my TMJ problems and sleep issues actually be connected?

In many cases, the jaw, bite, airway, breathing, and sleep are worth evaluating together rather than looking at each symptom in isolation.

Hello, I’m Dr. James Segulyev, DDS, and at Segulyev Dental Arts in North Dallas, helping patients understand these connections is an important part of my approach to dental health.

Looking Beyond Jaw Pain with TMJ/TMD:

TMJ disorders can present differently from one person to another. Jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, facial discomfort, muscle tension, clenching, grinding, and changes in the bite can all warrant a closer look at how the entire chewing system is functioning.

My approach to TMJ/TMD treatment begins with careful evaluation rather than simply treating the symptom. Depending on the individual patient, treatment options may include MAGO Therapy (Maxillary Anterior Guided Orthotic), the Gelb appliance, and other conservative therapies designed to improve function and comfort.

I have been tremendously encouraged by the results we are seeing with patients using these approaches.

Sleep and Airway Health Matter, Too:

Breathing and sleep are another important part of the picture. Sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea can affect adults and children, and the signs aren’t always obvious.

Snoring, restless sleep, daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, mouth breathing, and other symptoms may be reasons to investigate airway health more closely.

I am a Diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy and certified in The Vivos® System protocol, which provides a minimally invasive approach to addressing airway development and sleep-disordered breathing. I work with both adults and children to evaluate their individual needs and determine appropriate options for care. In addition to Vivos, I’ve also had incredible success using the Herbst Appliance, especially in growing patients and certain adult cases. This advanced orthopedic device helps guide the lower jaw forward, opening the airway and improving breathing patterns. When used appropriately, it can be a powerful tool in correcting jaw position and supporting optimal airway development. I have completed advanced training in the application of this appliance and carefully select it for patients who will benefit most from its unique design and function.

Why I Look at the Whole System:

One of the things I love most about practicing Holistic & Biologic Dentistry is being able to look beyond an individual tooth or symptom.

Your jaw, bite, airway, breathing, and sleep don’t exist independently of one another. My goal is to understand how these systems are functioning together and help each patient find an individualized path toward better function, greater comfort, healthier sleep, and improved quality of life.

If you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ/TMD, sleep apnea, or sleep-disordered breathing, I would be honored to help you explore what may be contributing to them and what treatment options may be appropriate for you.

Sincerely,

Dr. James Segulyev, DDS
